The work of the Church of God Chapel Bodden Town was started in the home of Ms. Armenthia Carter sometime in the 1930’s. This work began mainly through the efforts of Bro Orrie Merren II and Sis Glandore Solomon. Some of the other early leaders of the congregation were: Sisters Elva Carter, Ella Thompson, Ginnie Wood, Esmie Jackson, Connie Bodden, Delsie Watson and Brother Henry Frederick.
The congregation was pastored by the resident missionary until about 1964. These missionaries had responsibility forall the congregations and were assisted by local leaders, teachers from Triple ‘C’ School, such as Sisters Wilma Watler, Caroline Merren, Elsie Hurr, Ethel Masters, Emilia Blaskosky and Phelps, and volunteers like Sister Ena Merren and Brother Orrie Merren from the George Town congregation.
Around 1940 a small wooden building was erected for worship on land donated by Nathaniel Carter. The missionary would visit the congregation as often as possible to hold services on Sunday evenings. Regular services on Sunday mornings commenced January 1961. Land for a parsonage was donated by James & Mary Lawrence on Old Monument Road. Work on the small cottage was begun by missionaries Rev. Arthur & Mary Kluge, and completed in 1964 during the ministry of Rev.Edward McLellen, a young American college student who served the congregation for a year.
Pastors Compton Williams, Tharpe and Kunkle served between the years 1964 and 1971 The current pastors, Winston & Hyacinth Rose, have served since May 1972. Construction of the present church building began in 1980 with the help of a work group from Michigan led by
Pastor Lloyd Jury. Dedication was 15th February 1983. The parsonage was enlarged and dedicated on the 4th November 1990 as Hope Hill Children’s Home. This ministry was in operation for about a year with house parents Jeff and Mendi Davis. The congregation is currently in a building program to construct a new worship centre a short distance from the current location.
